Jason Michael
You May Remove Your Wigs

NOON Projects is pleased to present You May Remove Your Wigs a presentation of ceramic vessels by Jason Michael.

Michael works outside in their studio in Tujunga, California, where each piece begins with the intention of creating a buddha from clay. During creation, faces emerge from the material, at times resembling ancient aliens, wacky witches, or gay gods. With a gentle nod to found treasures, idols, and curio, the vessels examine the borders of human/god and earthen/celestial.

The exhibition title is a reference to a quote from the 1990 film The Witches starring Angelica Huston where a group of witches gather at a rural English hotel to convene and together in a congress safely peel off their human faces and fleshy masks to reveal the grotesque and warty witches truly inside.

Michael works with glazes which highlight the sculptures as an object, calling attention to the body, specifically the head. The artist remarks on the vessels, “Cut your own head off - metaphorically of course - the mind is your own problem, so away with it.”
