Blue Thin Horizon
Ben Borden

NOON Projects is honored to present Blue Thin Horizon, an exhibition of new works by Ben Borden at Kulttuurisauna in Helsinki, Finland.

Borden’s practice employs a hybrid of chemical and organic processes to create

The paintings arise through a negotiation of control and surrender. Borden works with chemicals developed to create the world’s first light-fast pigment; later adapted to test the integrity of steel welds, combining them in a soup of algae bioplastic and steel. Within this medium, he sets the conditions for an event, allowing matter, process, and time to co-author the image. The resulting abstractions evoke geode cross-sections, microscopic images or psychic landscapes. While akin to Artificial Intelligence in their self-creation, Borden’s works feel animated by a soul and a spiritual charge; something irreducibly alive.

The site of Blue Thin Horizon, Kulttuurisauna, on the harbor’s edge beside an industrial and shipping zone, mirrors the artist’s own studio in Commerce, California. There, among Los Angeles’s manufacturing and transit infrastructure, Borden often collaborates with tradespeople and local industries, embedding the processes of industrial production directly into his work.

Neither static nor solitary, Borden’s work unfolds through collaboration with forces beyond the artist’s hand, extending a practice that relies on faith as much as it shapes.
